What is Magento? Magento is an open source e-commerce platform written in PHP. Magento is designed to be very flexible, with a modular architecture and rich features. It is easy to integrate seamlessly with third-party application systems. It is enterprise-oriented and can handle various needs and build a multi-purpose and applicable e-commerce website. What is the Magento framework like? The software was originally developed by Varien, Inc, a private American company based in Culver City, California, with the help of volunteers. Varien released the first general availability version of the software on March 31, 2008. Varien's former CEO Roy Rubin later sold a majority stake in the company to eBay, which eventually acquired and sold the company to Permira. Permira later sold it to Adobe. Magento 2.0 was released on November 17, 2015. Features changed in V2 include: reduced table locking issues, improved page caching, enterprise-level scalability, built-in rich structured data snippets, new file structure, easier customization, CSS preprocessing using LESS and CSS URL parser, improved performance and a more structured code base. Magento uses MySQL or MariaDB relational database management systems, PHP programming language and elements of Zend Framework. It applies object-oriented programming and Model-View-Controller convention architecture. Magento also uses entity-attribute-value model to store data. On top of that, Magento 2 uses JavaScript library Knockout.js to introduce Model-View-ViewModel pattern to its front-end code. This is the end of the introduction to Magento in this issue.
